Books have a very long history. Even in ancient times, the book trade was fundamental to recording knowledge and making it accessible to people. At that time, however, books were not written on paper, but on burnt clay tablets, palm leaves or papyrus and parchment rolls. The book is one of the foundations on which our cultural identity is based. And even though the book is at a turning point in today's electronic age, we at Creatokia are convinced that it will continue to play its elemental role in human history. That's why we've created a platform that introduces the next big step in publishing: NFT Books.

A glance back in time

There were some major milestones that changed the world. When letterpress printing was invented in 1450, the large-scale reproduction of knowledge became possible. This groundbreaking invention helped the world learn to read. In the late 18th century, the stationary retail book trade developed and brought books into more and more households. Many other innovations of the 19th and 20th centuries led to books being printed faster, automatically and more beautifully.

The Digital Book

With the invention of the internet and e-book readers, came the next giant leap: from a printed single book to a complete library - the size of a paperback - to go! No matter what, no matter where - you have millions of books at your fingertips at all times. This step made books more accessible for readers across the globe.

 

However, this also had a big disadvantage: no flicking through, no great book cover designs to display on the shelf, and certainly no first editions to collect and get signed by the author. There is no "collectable" factor when every e-book exists on millions of e-book readers. However, people have always been, and continue to be, collectors.

The next era: NFT books

 

None of this is new. But now it's time for the next big leap: the invention of "digital originals". Digital originals are unique digital copies, for example, first editions with visually captivating book covers.

A Digital Original can be transformed into a NFT Book which only one person can call their own. This is made possible by a technological innovation: the blockchain. Specifically, thanks to NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), which are stored on a digital ledger recording transactions, called the “blockchain”. The most commonly used blockchain for NFTs (as of October 2021) is Ethereum

To explain it as simply as possible: blockchain technology makes it possible to clearly identify who is the owner of a digital file. This identification cannot be copied and is not forgeable. Furthermore, the transfer of an NFT takes place directly from person to person without the need for a third party, such as a bank, to confirm it. An NFT can also give its owner access to exclusive unlockable and downloadable content such as: images, audio files or ebooks.

For the first time in human history, we can not only clearly identify digital property, but also buy, trade and transfer it in seconds! We truly believe that this is the next stage of the internet. In the beginning there was the "internet of information". With the increasing popularity of social media platforms came the "internet of communication". Now comes the third stage: the "internet of value".

The NFT Book

It is easiest to understand the ownership of a "NFT Book" through an example. When you send a photo via email, a copy of the picture is sent. You still possess the original file, but at the same time the photo also reaches the recipient. In this way, there can be a huge number of duplicates without anyone knowing how many copies exist or which is the original file.

With the new blockchain technology and Non-Fungible Tokens, one can clearly trace who owns, for example, a digital work of art or the first edition of a book. One can still save the image of the NFT as a JPG via a right-click and have access to it, but it would be like taking a photo of the Mona Lisa painting. Having this picture does not mean that you own the original Mona Lisa, just a copy or a representation. With NFTs, now one always knows who the owner of a work is - The Digital Original is created.

Benefits & Types of NFTs

What can you do with a Non Fungible Token? Every NFT can be bought, owned and sold again. This makes it possible to collect special works, but also to trade these digital originals among private individuals. There are platforms similar to eBay on which you can offer your NFTs for sale.

What forms can a Non Fungible Token take? Current NFTs that already exist are mainly digital (audio-)visual art, sports cards and games, or avatars, properties and items in those games. As of today, there is no dedicated platform for NFT books and literature - which is exactly why we decided to create Creatokia.
