    Description

Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea by Jules Verne, published between 1869 and 1870, tells the story of Captain Nemo, who roams the world's oceans in his submarine. The story is told from the perspective of the French professor Pierre Aronnax, who is sent on an expedition by the American government to investigate the mysterious shipwrecks of 1866 and 1867 - and who, as illustrations in the original edition prove, is supposed to represent Jules Verne himself. After the professor and his companions track down the Nautilus, they are kept on board as prisoners and experience a series of incredible adventures at the bottom of the world's oceans: they recover sunken treasures, fight a giant kraken and discover ruins of the lost Atlantis. Although submarines existed during Jules Verne's lifetime, they were nowhere near as technically advanced as the Nautilus in Verne's novel. He was ahead of his time - and still is, captured in this NFT with a famous scene from the book: Captain Nemo's ode to the sea.

    Jules Verne

Jules Verne was a 19th-century French writer who became widely famous for his novels Journey to the Center of the Earth (1864), Around the World in Eighty Days (1873) and Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas (1869–1870). His desire for adventures was already evident at a young age: As an eleven-year-old, he pretended to be a ship's boy, so he could travel the world, but was taken off board shortly before the ship sailed. Jules Verne, who actually studied law and was supposed to take over his father's law practice, is one of the most important french writers. His novels are characterised by technical progress and the last great voyages of discovery of his era. Along with authors such as H.G. Wells, he is regarded as one of the founders of science fiction. His futuristic thinking connects him perfectly with the blockchain – on which his work will still be written down in the distant future.

    Toby Stephens

Toby plays the leading role of Mr Robinson next to Molly Parker and Parker Posey in the legendary Netflix remake of Lost in Space. He has also recently finished shooting the lead role in the upcoming second series of Alex Rider for Eleventh Hour Films. He starred in Stephen Poliakoff's new 6-part drama Summer of Rockets for BBC2 and also played the brilliant lead role of Captain Flint in four seasons of the Starz series Black Sails.
