    Description

    Charles Dickens

Works such as David Copperfield, The Christmas Story, and Oliver Twist made Charles Dickens one of the most widely read authors in English literature. They are all stories that contain inspirations and autobiographical traits from Dickens' own life. The writer himself was born in 1812 in Landport, England, as the second of 8 children in poor circumstances. At the age of 12, he had to earn money as a laborer to buy his father out of debtor's prison. After he was able to continue his schooling, he quickly found employment with a lawyer and has been able to work his way up ever since. In 1838, immediately after the first publication of Oliver Twist, Dickens became editor of the Daily News newspaper. Since his works were popular throughout the English-speaking world, he undertook reading tours in Europe and America.

On June 9, 1870, Charles Dickens died as a result of a second stroke.
