    Description

Mrs Dalloway is one of the most important novels by the British writer Virginia Woolf, published in 1925 by her own publishing house, The Hogarth Press. The story takes place on a single June day in London and follows two narrative threads: On one side is a day in the life of high-society woman Mrs Dalloway as she makes preparations for her upcoming party, and on the other side are the experiences and thoughts of traumatised war veteran Septimus Smith. The two separate narrative threads are linked at the end of the day when Septimus' suicide becomes one of the main conversation topics at Mrs Dalloway's party. What particularly stands out in this novel is the narrative style, which switches fluidly between descriptions of external events and internal, psychological processes. The famous stream of consciousness is also a key element of the work. With her special narrative style, Virginia Woolf strongly influenced the development of the 20th century novel.

    Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf (1882–1941) was a British writer and publisher. Inspired by her father's writing, his extensive private library and her access to London intellectual circles, she decided at an early age to become a writer herself. Two years after her debut novel The Voyage Out, she founded The Hogarth Press with her husband in 1917, where she was responsible for author acquisition and editing. She herself also wrote numerous essays, psychological and experimental novels, including her important work Mrs Dalloway (1925). In 1941, Virginia Woolf committed suicide after suffering from depression and psychotic episodes all her life. She is not only one of the most important Modernist authors, but her work also inspired the feminist movements of the 1970s.
